The milestones of the history of Ayurveda in Hungary


1879. One page is written on Ayurveda in the First Hungarian Pharmacopoea


1931. Six pages on Ayurveda are written in the book titled „India” by Dr. Ervin Baktay


1991:

  • Garuda Trade Ltd. is founded for the licencing and marketing of herbal ayurvedic paramedicines, cosmetics and veterinary products in Hungary
  • Contracted cooperation starts between Garuda Trade Ltd. and Dabur India Ltd.
  • The first OGYI-licenced ayurvedic human paramedicines are put onto market in Hungary (Dabur Shilajit, Dabur Nature Care Isabgol)
  • a 30-years Program is put into frame to mark the main steps of the introduction of Ayurveda into Hungary (between 1990-2020), which becomes the guiding basis for the fulfillment of the aims of Garuda Trade Ltd, and of the Hungarian Ayurveda Medical Foundation (since 1996)


1991-2009. Ayurvedic paramedicines, cosmetics and veterinary products are licenced with the Hungarian official licencing authorities (OGYI, OÉTI, OMMI, FVM). By 2007 more then 100 human and veterinary ayurvedic products are licenced and marketed by Garuda Trade Ltd.


1992: Dr. Deepika Gunawant (delegated by Dabur India Ltd.) helds lectures for Hungarian allopathic doctors at Szekesfehervar, for the first time in Hungary


1993: Licencing of ayurvedic paramedicines and cosmetics is continued by Garuda Trade Ltd.


1994: Prof. Ram Harsh Singh helds lectures for students of Medical Universities of Budapest and Szeged for the first time


1995: Licencing of ayurvedic paramedicines and cosmetics is continued by Garuda Trade Ltd.


1996:

  • The Hungarian Ayurveda Medical Foundation PUO is founded with the aim of creating a scientific background for Ayurveda in Hungary, spreading the teachings of Ayurveda amongst medical experts and to the greater public
  • Dr. Bela Daubner is delegated to Benares Hindu University for two months to learn Ayurveda (with the support of the Foundation)


1997:

  • Ayurveda becomes an official health care system in Hungary by Government Act 40/1997 on Naturapathy, thanks to efforts made by the Foundation
  • Dr. K. Bharti ayurveda professor is delegated to Hungary to keep a 6-week course on Ayurveda for 19 Hungarian doctors
  • Calendula Ayurvedic Private Clinic is founded in Siofok, Hungary, by Dr. Dmitri Skopintsev, chief physician, managing director


1998:

  • The first FVM and OMMI-licenced ayurvedic veterinary paramedicines and fodder-supplements are put onto market in Hungary
  • 108 volumes of Indian Materia Medica are brought to Hungary and granted to goverment leaders, hospitals, medical universities, scientific centres


2000. Dr. Lilla Kiraly is delegated to Benares Hindu University for a ½ year period, to learn Ayurveda (supported by the Foundation and by the Hungarian Ministry of Health)


2001. The Indo-Hungarian Health Agreement is signed for a period of 5 years (till 31st of December 2005; with the help of H.E. Lakshmi Puri, Ambassador of India), which enhances the government level and scientific cooperation with ISM&H in the field of Ayurveda


2002: The first Hungarian veterinary ayurveda diploma work is written by Dr. Dora Megyeri on poultry breeding with ayurvedic fodder-supplements (Stresroak and Superliv produced by Ayurvet Ltd.)


2003: The Ayurveda Library of the Foundation (of more than 300 volumes) is inaugurated in Budapest, by H.E. Manbir Singh (Ambassador of India), and Dr. Peter Medgyes (Secretary of the Ministry of Education of Hungary), in order to build up a scientific background for the university-level teaching of Ayurveda in Hungary. The creation of the Foundation was financed by HAMF.


2004: The Hungarian version of the book Ayurveda Unravelled (with the title of „Ayurveda Mindenkinek” meaning „Ayurveda for All”) is published in 12.000 copies, with the permission of the Indian Goverment (financed by HAMF). Further 2.000 copies are published in 2008, financed by the Embassy of India to Budapest.


2005:

  • Mr. Istvan Riesz, the Chairman of the Hungarian Ayurveda Medical Foundation participates the II. International Ayurveda Congress (Talkatore Indoor Stadium, Delhi), and holds a lecture on the status of Ayurveda in Hungary for 1.500 ayurveda doctors, as first Hungarian lecturer at an international event on Ayurveda.
  • Two further diploma works are written in connection with Ayurveda and wellness/cosmetics (by Ms. Brigitta Barna and by Ms. Edit Palotas), by support of HAMF


2006: 21st of April; The first Central-European Veterinary Ayurveda Conference is held in Budapest with the participation of almost 100 veterinarian experts from Hungary and from the 7 neighbouring countries, with Hungarian and Indian lecturers. This event was the first one of this kind in the whole EU as well.


2007:

  • Ayurveda is discussed for the first time as a main topic of the XV. Indo-Hungarian Joint Business Council Meetings in Delhi, India
  • The first Hungarian ayurveda diploma work is written in the field of pharmacy
  •      (by Dr. Virag Hodi, pharmacist, SOTE University, Budapest)
  • Further two excellent ayurveda diploma works are written in the field of Ayurveda and wellness/tourism (by Ms. Judit Bara and Ms. Anita Hegyi)
  • A cooperation starts with the University of Debrecen, Faculty of Medicine in order to create a higher level of education of Ayurveda in Hungary; Prof. Dr. Narayan Shah Indian ayurveda doctor holds a lecture to medical students of the University on the medical science of Ayurveda
  • Dr. Arun Gupta, the first ayurveda doctor to work in Hungary starts his practice at Calendula Ayurvedic Clinic (Siofok, Hungary)
  • 29th of September; the First International Conference-cum-Exhibition on Ayurveda is organized in Budapest in the organization of the Embassy of India and HAMF, with more then 500 registered participants and 32 lecturers (from India and from 14 European countries)
  • 26th-28th of October; Mr. Istvan Riesz, Chairman of the HAMF keeps a lecture within the frame of Arogya (Health) International Conference and Exhibition in Delhi, India
  • The Foundation accepts the assignment of the Government of India to create the Ayurveda Coordination Center of Europe (ACCE), a web database (at www.ayurveda.hu) to enhance the cooperation and daily contact between the ayurveda organizations, companies and practitioners working in Europe, and between AYUSH.

2008:

  • -     18th of January, New Delhi: the Indo-Hungarian Health Agreement is extended for further 5 years till 2012, strenghtening the will of both Governments to cooperate in the field of Ayurveda.
  • -     Three ayurveda experts (leaded by Dr. Surinder Katoch) are delegated to Hungary for a period of 6 weeks by AYUSH (Ministry of Health of India) with the aim of training wellness experts of Hungarian wellness hotels and centres to ayurvedic massage and beauty treatments.
  • -     University level teaching of Ayurveda to doctors and health-care experts is started at Hungarian Medical Universities and Colleges of Health Studies (Pecs, Miskolc, Nyiregyhaza) by Dr. Ivan Szalkai, and prepared at Debrecen University by Dr. Gyorgy Blasko.
  • -     The Board of Trustees of HAMF, the Embassy of India to Budapest, and the Ministry of Health of Hungary has granted Certificates of Appreciation to two OGYI-leaders, Prof. Dr. Tamás Paál, and Dr. Mária Bogdán, as an appreciation of their contribution to the licencing of ayurvedic products in Hungary.

Till May 2009:

  • 4th of February: Publishing of the book „Ayurveda and Wellness – The Ayurvedic massage” (Ayurveda és a Wellness – Az ayurvedikus masszázs) in Hungarian language in 2.000 copies.
  • 10th-20th of February: Official visiting of Mr. Riesz to India to meet leaders of AYUSH (Indian Ministry of Health) and of other authorities, and business partners in Delhi and Kolkata.
  • 3rd of March: The university level teaching of Ayurveda continues (or is being prepared) at 4 Hungarian universities and colleges by Dr. Ivan Szalkai (MD) and Dr. Gyorgy Blasko (MD), according to the letter of assignment granted by HAMF.
  • 5th-6th of March, Portorose, Slovenia: Mr. Istvan Riesz participates as a lecturer and exhibitor the International Conference on Ayurveda - „A New Way for Healthy Life in Europe”, attended by many ayurveda experts from 18 European countries and from India as well.
  • On the 3rd of March 2009 the Board of Trustees of the Hungarian Ayurveda Medical Foundation has granted a Certificate of Appreciation to H.E. Mr. Ranjit Rae, Ambassador of India, as a symbol of their appreciation and gratefullness for the Ambassador's imperishable merits in supporting the introduction of Ayurveda to Hungary, which brought many new supporters to the ancient Indian medical system.
  • Mr. Istvan Riesz Dr.(Ayu)Hon., Chairman of the Hungarian Ayurveda Medical Foundation PUO was granted this years "For the Naturapathy" Award by the Hungarian Association of Naturapathists, as the acknowledgement of his dedicated work of two decades done in order to introduce the ancient Indian medical system of Ayurveda to Hungary.
